MOVING TO SPAIN · QUESTIONS
What is empadronamiento, and why does everyone mention it?
The padrón is your town hall’s census, and empadronamiento is the act of registering yourself on it at your Spanish address. It costs nothing and feels bureaucratically minor — but it’s the key that unlocks almost everything local: your residence card appointment, the public health card, school enrollment, even discounts on local services.
That’s why it sits so early in every arrival checklist: until you’re on the padrón, several downstream steps simply can’t start. Register as soon as you have an address — even a rental — and keep the certificate; you’ll be asked for it repeatedly in your first months.
Which of this applies to you?
